SARANA  Program

The ‘SARANA’ Program is an initiative of the Australia Sri Lanka Buddhist Association (ASLBA). ‘SARANA’ is a settlement assistance program administered by the ASLBA to the benefit of new entrants to Canberra be they students or migrants from Sri Lanka. The main aim of this program is to assist new entrants from Sri Lanka in their initial settlement process by providing the essential household items (subject to availability) and information about accommodation and other goods and services. The ASLBA expects to meet any program administration costs as they are with help from the Canberra Sri Lankan community.

It is not unusual for people to periodically replace their household items for various reasons. When new purchases are made, it is customary to donate the old ones in good working order to charitable organisations. We appeal to members of our community to make future donations of such unwanted household items to the ‘SARANA’ Program.

Towards the end of last year, ASLBA with the assistance of several members of our community helped some newcomers in this way by donating essential basic household items. We thank all of them most sincerely for their good will, generosity and support.

The items required for distribution include beds, writing tables, dinning tables and chairs, lounge suits, televisions, radios, VCRs, DVD players, computers, printers, irons, ironing tables, washing machines, refrigerators, kettles, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery, cups, plates, drinking glasses, toys, children’s books, children’s bicycles, strollers, bedding, clothing and any other essential items. The only requirement is that the items must be clean and in good working condition.

The committee of the ASLBA would be most grateful, if you could provide to us photos of items you are able to donate, so that we can contact you to collect the items for distribution to the new arrivals. As you know the temple has no storage space to keep all donated items. We therefore request that you hold these items with you until a recipient is identified.

We currently have new arrivals who are in need of our help, so please send us your lists at the earliest to

Please note that the ASLBA Committee endorsed that this program be coordinated by Dr. Lyn Liyanage and Secretary of ASLBA, is the designated official of the ASLBA, who would be providing support/assistance to Dr. Liyanage to accomplish this important task.
If you are a new entrant to Canberra and need assistance please send us an email to with your contact details. We will contact you soonest to discuss possible assistant we can offer.
May you be peaceful and happy.
